Helen Catherine Hardwicke was born October 21, 1955 in Cameron, Texas and originally trained as an architect at the University of Texas. She spent most of the 1990s as a production designer, working on over 20 films. Catherine's debut as a feature film co-writer and director was the Sundance award winning Thirteen. She and fourteen-year-old Nikki Reed (who played Rosalie Hale in Twilight) collaborated in writing a movie that would reflect Reed's teenage experiences. They completed the script in six days.
