Simultaneously Adam is plagued by a lawyer demanding that his beloved daughter Cassie should be handed over to her maternal grandmother to save the child from 'disgrace'. Nellie decides that she must leave Kalinda to save Adam further embarrassment. Hurt and angry, he leaves to join the army and serve in World War II. Under fire in Nazi-occupied Greece, Adam encounters the beautiful Melina O'Sullivan, a woman who will become his second wife.
