A bit more about the Hippopotamus books Since it was first published in 1980, the ageless Hippopotamus on the Roof has been reprinted annually, evolved into a series of seven picture books and inspired a junior chapter book, classroom play scripts, stage production and a short movie. The Hippopotamus books have also been translated into Braille and Auslan signing for the hearing impaired and were presented as an official Australian Government gift to the children of Princess Mary of Denmark. About the author and illustrator Hazel Edwards writes across media, for adults & children. A literary ambassador, Hazel is involved with the 2012 National Year of Reading and the Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge. She holds 'webinars', mentors and is a director on the Australian Society of Authors' committee. She is the recipient of the 2009 ASA Medal awarded by her writing peers. Hazel has been nominated three times for The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, the world's largest prize for children's and young adult literature. She also runs workshops for genealogists. Hazel is married with two adult children and two grandsons for whom she writes stories each birthday. Deborah Niland has been drawing and painting all her life. She has painted for art exhibitions and galleries, and illustrated for newspapers and magazines. Most of all, she has built a successful career illustrating children's books. Some well-known and popular titles include Mulga Bill's Bicycle, When The Wind Changed and Chatterbox. Deborah now enjoys writing and illustrating her own stories. Her picture book, Annie's Chair, which was first published in 2005, has won many awards, including the 2006 Children's Book of the Year- Early Childhood, and several Children's Choice awards.
