Awards Babette has won the Kate Greenaway Medal and the BLA Annabell Fargeon Award for both Princess Smartypants (1986) and Prince Cinders (1987). Princess Smartypants also won the British Library Association (BLA) award in 1986. About the Author:Babette Cole was born in 1950. She is an English children's writer and illustrator. Babette attended The Canterbury College of Art where she received a BA Honours. She worked at the BBC creating children's programs such as Bagpuss and Watch With Mother. She has written over 70 picture books and her best-selling book Doctor Dog has been made into a successful children's cartoon series. She mainly writes children's comedy books including The Smelly Book, The Hairy Book, The Slimy Book and The Silly Book. Babette draws inspiration from her own animals, from Tenniel - whose Alice drawings "contributed to my love of the grotesque", from Edward Lear "for his scratchy lines" and from Quentin Blake - "the creme de la creme". Babette currently spends her time writng, visitng schools and travelling.
