The photographs in At My Table have been taken as polaroid transfers. Each image is printed onto cotton paper and each is therefore an original work of art. At My Table is an Australian publication. All recipes are in metric, imperial, and cup & spoon measurements Donna remembers her first cookbook in her April/May 2012 Donna Hay magazine I recently uncovered a boxful of the very first cookbook I ever wrote. As I leafed through the pages of At My Table, I remembered all the hope, hard work and hours that went into this much-loved creation. Back in 1995, when the book was first published, I had no idea how it would light the way for my career - at the time, I was more preoccupied with scrounging together the money to buy produce for the photoshoots! To create the painted artwork-style images in the book, photographer Quentin Bacon and I spent hours making Polaroid transfers by rubbing Polaroids onto watercolour paper. My hands and wrists were so sore from rubbing what seemed like thousands of them! One day, the fashion director of the soon-to-open Marie Claire magazine,
Jane Roarty, walked into the studio to find me on the floor,
furiously making transfers. She took one look and, so I've been
told, marched straight back to editor Jackie Frank to announce
she'd found their new food editor. The rest is history, but this
book, which seems like such a relic from the past, is proof that
a little drive, a dash of perfectionism, and a willingness to roll
up your sleeves never goes unnoticed. About the author Donna Hay is one of the best–known names in cookbook and magazine publishing in the world. Her books have sold more than 2.2 million copies internationally and are renowned for their fresh style, easy–to–follow recipes and inspirational photography. Donna's first job post-TAFE home economics diploma was in the test kitchens of the Australian Women's Weekly. She began to not only develop recipes but to style them, too. Distracted by the plethora of extras : candles, glasses, flowers, sauce boats, fancy folded napkins that went into photographing a dish, Donna started to pare down the props and let the food be the hero. By the time Donna had become the food editor of marie claire magazine her style was set: fresh, modern food on white plates, with simple backgrounds that has captured the imagination of cooks worldwide and set a new benchmark for modern food styling and publishing. Many phenomenally successful cookbooks later (including off the shelf and modern classics books 1&2, Donna Hay has a swag of prestigious international food awards. Her latest book, Simple Dinners, is already a bestseller, and donna hay magazine continues to inspire cooks of all levels of experience with each new seasonal addition of simple but special recipe and entertaining ideas.
