Getting Started in Permaculture is a book of practical activities which shows you how to build and design productive gardens. It outlines the step-by-step procedures for making herb fertilisers, compost, organic sprays for pest control and much, much more. The book also discusses how to recycle your soft drink bottles, waste paper and tyres in a number of useful projects such as ponds, fruit fly traps, retaining walls and solar stills.
Permacultures is based on the ethics of caring for our planet and caring for people. It is about growing your own healthy food, being resourceful and environmentally responsible. Permaculture concepts and ideas can be applied successfully from small suburban units to large farming properties.
Getting Started in Permaculture is based on the development of Candlelight Farm and the photographs included in this book depict some of the progressive changes from a bare paddock to a harmonious, productive living system. This book is yet another step towrads reconciling humankind with nature. It urges you to do something, no matter how small, to help heal this planet.
About the Authosr
Dr Ross Mars
B.App.Sc. (Chem), Dip Ed., B.App.Sc. (Biol, Hons), PhD (Env Sc) is a well-known Western Australian educator, writer and course and workshop presenter. He completed a PhD in Environmental Science at Murdoch University in 2001. His research centred on the use of native wetland plants to strip nutrients from domestic greywater. The title of his thesis was "Using the submergent Triglochin huegelii for domestic greywater treatment".
Ross also has qualifications in Permaculture, having achieved the first Diploma in Permaculture issued in Western Australia. He has also been awarded his Diploma of Permaculture Design, in six categories, including Site Design, Education, Media and Communications, and Administration, from Permaculture founder, Bill Mollison and the Permaculture Institute.
He has taught a large number of permaculture-related courses and workshops, including several Advanced courses in both Permaculture Design and Teaching. In recent years Ross has focussed on developing permaculture gardens and education strategies within schools, and developing and installing greywater reuse systems in and around Perth.
Jennifer Mars
B.A. (Education, Primary), Dip Perm. Des. is a primary school teacher with a passion for the environment, gardening and plants, especially herbs. Jenny also has a Diploma in Permaculture and has a particular interest in growing food to enable families to work towards supporting themselves.
