About the author

Helen Catherine Hardwicke was born October 21, 1955 in Cameron, Texas and originally trained as an architect at the University of Texas. She spent most of the 1990s as a production designer, working on over 20 films films including Tombstone (1993), Tank Girl (1995), 2 Days in the Valley (1996), The Newton Boys (1998), and Three Kings (1999). In 2000 she collaborated with director/screenwriter Cameron Crowe and actor/producer Tom Cruise on Vanilla Sky (2001). Three Kings and Vanilla Sky are notable for their original use of color-manipulation techniques to complement the narrative.

Catherine's debut as a feature film co-writer and director was the Sundance award winning Thirteen. She and fourteen-year-old Nikki Reed (who played Rosalie Hale in Twilight) collaborated in writing a movie that would reflect Reed's teenage experiences. They completed the script in six days. Thirteen was made for under million dollars and picked up an Academy Award-nomination for Holly Hunter. Catherine has since directed Lords of Dogtown, The Nativity Story, and most recently, Twilight. The opening weekend of Twilight was the biggest opening ever for a female director.
